A dreamy creamy kitchen

If there is one thing my husband and I agree up when it comes to home decor it's that we both LOVE white kitchens. Hands down we are just white kitchen people. We didn't want that to stop us from buying a home though because kitchen cabinets can be changed. When we were house hunting we almost built a new construction home in a neighborhood called Robbins Park. Walking through their model we homes we feel in LOVE with their open airy decor and open floor plans. However, these top notch homes came at a price tag that was going to end up being more debt than we wanted to take on. We acheived our open floor plan dream with our new home on Linksland and now are working to give it that open airy feel. First, here's some our inspiration. These are photos of the Robbins Park model homes. photo Floorplans_Huntington_SL_Photos_RobbinsRetreat_329_Kitchen08_zps8b6335fe.jpg photo 67212ccf-6bc2-4a07-bb3b-11617459f4aa_zps10e8cbd9.jpg

Beautiful right?

Here's a picture of our kitchen now...

And this was mine and lindsey's sad attempt at painting the cabinets white/cream to see what it will look like. bahahahhaah. photo bwhahaha.jpg
Pretty terrible visual...guess we'll just have to wait for the real thing!! The cabinets are being repainted on Feb. 14th! Happy Valentines day to me.

The other thing we loved in these robbins park model homes was the pale blue paint. I would never think of doing so much blue in a home but it's so pretty and if you go pale enough with a touch of gray it really can act as a neutral. This past weekend we spent some time picking out the perfect white cabinet color and the perfect blue/gray wall color for our new home. This is what we ended up with.

Sherwin Williams "creamy" and Benjamin Moore "gray sky" All the trim in the house will be Sherwin Williams "pure white"

Hunter and I read in a design book that you should look at your wall color as a pair of pants. If someone told you, you had to wear the same color pants for 3 years what would you pick? If you went with your royal blue pants you might have fun wearing them for the first month but after a while you'd get sick of them and probably run out of ideas of tops to pair with them. But a pair of Khakis you could probably wear all three years, never run out of top ideas or tire of them. Interesting way of looking at it...I think i could wear Gray sky pants for three years. Could you?

Listening to Lilly

I'm listening to Lilly when it comes to New Years Resolutions this year. Instead of the typical go to church, loose weight, yada yada yada....I'm making These mine aren't they MUCH more FUN? :)

Wear more colors (prints too)
Over-indulge in candy (preferably chocolate)
Drink more cocktails (after 5’oclock…swear)
Take a long lunch break (meet your friends and order carbs)
Leave work early (only a few minutes.. wink wink)
Spend time with the family (especially the kids)
Smile more often (ear to ear, all day, everyday)
Listen to music (and sing along out loud)
Be messy (creativity is seldom tidy)
Take a vacation (to somewhere fabulous & be sure to pack your Lilly)
Throw a party (complete with pink champagne & cupcakes)
Read a good book (may we suggest “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett)
Shop often (even if it’s just window shopping)
Take a spin class (but remember shopping counts as cardio too)
Most importantly resolve to BE HAPPY.

New Years Day Lunch (or dinner)

Whew, I'm a little back logged on blogs because I, like others, have been fighting a nasty cold! But I'm feeling back in the game tonight so here goes....

It's southern traditions like this that make me a "wanna-be southern belle" and LOVE the south. The Traditional New Years day meal of hogs jowl, collard greens, and black eyed peas. Hunters family first introduced me to it about a year after we started dating and we haven't missed it on New Years day yet! Call me superstitious but I would really worry about having a bad year if I didn't have my health, wealth, and good luck on New Years Day. Here's the meal we serve, a brief description and some pretty pictures for those visual learners :)

Bull Shots
Relish Tray
Deviled eggs
Ham
Hogs Jowl
Collard Greens
Black-eyed peas
Jiffy corn muffins

First and most important you have to start your morning off with a Bull shot, thought to cure your hangover from NYEve! Bull shots are similar to a Bloody Mary but instead of tomato juice you use beef broth.

Bull Shots
1 part Vodka
2 parts beef broth
celery salt
dash of Worcestershire
dash of Tabasco
black pepper

Next, with bull shot in hand, you can do lots of things in the morning to prep your meal. If using fresh collards de-stem them and cut up the leafy part. Cut your tomato and onion for your black-eyed peas, make your deviled eggs, and get your ham marinating in a casserole dish. I also set the table way ahead of time and get out all the platters, butter dishes, salt/pepper, gravy boat etc that we will need...this way your not scrambling when the food is hot to put butter on the table.

Relish Tray - This is also a Lunsford thing. At every holiday dinner Hunters family always has a relish tray complete with celery, pickled okra, pepperchini peppers and a variety of pickles.

Deviled Eggs
- I never follow a recipe when making deviled eggs and if I do say so myself they always turn out pretty good. Hard boiled egg yoke, sweet relish, mustard, mayo, salt & pepper....mixed together until it tastes right! BUT most importantly....and I promise Hunter would not eat them if I forgot this step....a sprinkle a seasoned salt on top once they are complete.

Ham - You need to do a meat other than Hogs Jowl as your main dish. Hogs Jowl is very salty and not very appetizing to some, so just take a taste to get your health and then veg on the ham as your main meat. We've done ham the past couple years but have also done pork tenderloins in the past as well.

Hunter bought a fairly large bone in Ham. In the morning he cut it into large thick slices, placed the slices in a casserole dish and poured a marinade over them that consisted of 1 cup brown sugar, 8oz of horseradish, and 1/2cup orange juice. (save some of the marinade to use as a gravy for when you serve the ham).

Hogs Jowl (Health)- pronounced hogs "jole" if you read how to cook them online you'll find most recipes tell you to slice them and fry them in a pan like bacon. Hunters family has never done them this way. The way we cook them takes about 2 hrs as do the collards, so be sure to plain according and start these two things about 2hrs before you want to eat. Unwrap the jowls and sear them on the stove top for about 5 minutes on each side. Then take them stove top to a 350-375 degree oven for about an hour and half. Depending how big your jowls are they may need a little more or a little less. You'll know they are done when the skin on the bottom just peels off. Take them out of the oven, peel the skin off and cut off most all the fat. Next score the tops and place them in a roasting pan to broil for about 10 minutes until the tops are nice and crispy. Remove and once cooled enough to handle, cut them into small pieces. We'll place pieces of the hogs jowl on one side of our serving platter and ham on the other. (More ham than Hogs Jowl) :)

Collard Greens (Wealth) - Hunters collard greens this year where the best yet! He followed a Paula Deen recipe and we really think the key is to season the water for an hour!! :) Of course if your not into that big of a production you can use frozen collards.

Black-Eyed Peas (Good Luck) - We use frozen bagged black-eyed peas...we really think they're the best. Just follow the cooking directions on the back of the bag. The key to making black-eyed peas yummy is serving them with either tomato and onion on top or a homemade chow chow that you can pick up at your local farmers market. I personally have NO IDEA what black eyed peas taste like with out lots of tomato and onion in them :)

Jiffy Corn Muffins - The blue jiffy box...just follow the directions on the back and you'll have yummy corn muffins in a jiffy...laaaaamo i know :) Helpful hint though....it works well to bake the muffins while you are cutting the fat off and scoring the jowls, since you'll need to have the oven on broil for the jowls after that.

There ya have it, The Lunsfords traditional, southern, New Years day Lunch (or dinner). Its a fun meal to tag team and cook together.

Hunter does the bull shots, ham, collards, black eyed peas and relish tray, I do the hogs jowls, deviled eggs, corn muffins, and of course set the table pretty :)

Speaking of pretty...a picture of the hubby and I ready to head out for a little New Years Eve party the night before!

Next up, our Monday night Orange bowl game day menu....despite it bringing back terrible memories or a horrid loss :(

The Best of 2010 - A year in Review

2010 was definitely a year that will go down in history for The Lunsfords (est. 2010). :) We celebrated several new babies entering the world, a couple marriages, and lots of house projects! Here's a recap:

January I took a trip to Poughkeepsie NY to see my niece Riley Mae Melrose baptised...I'm a proud God Mother to her! :) House Project: We wallpapered our dining room and half bath downstairs and added window treatments to our office, dining room, and bedroom.

February consisted of Showers! A baby shower for my friend Melody and then on February 27th my Maid of Honor and Charlotte Bridesmaids threw me a Southern Belle themed bridal shower complete with a Pink Armadillo cake! I have GREAT FRIENDS! House Project: we replaced with wedding projects from here through May! :)

March we celebrated birthdays! My friend Jessica's 30th birthday at a bar called Mez in uptown Charlotte, the birth of Owen Belcher our friends Jason and Melody's son and then Hunters 29th birthday where we annually hit up Hooters! (THIS year is his BIG 30 and my wheels are already turning for his Hooters themed party!) House Project: we replaced with wedding projects from here through May! :)

April Hunter went to Vegas for his Bachelor party (I'm sure there are NO pictures from that weekend), I went to NY for ANOTHER bridal shower given to me by oh so generous Maid of Honor and Bridesmaids from Rochester and then together we traveled to Greenville NC for Hunter's sister's baby shower! House Project: we replaced with wedding projects from here through May! :)

May was WEDDING MONTH! First weekend in May I hit up NYC with the ladies for my bachelorette weekend and on May 15th we said "I DO" followed up with 8 luxurious nights in St. Lucia at Calabash Cove Resort & Spa. House Project: we replaced with wedding projects from here through May! :)

June we picked right back up with life and attended my girlfriend Brandy's baby shower and then welcomed 2 new babies! Our niece Reagan Elizabeth Stocks and good friend Rich and Brandy's baby Richard Michael Marelli III! House Project: I recovered a chair in our dining room, and added a family picture collage above a new table at the top of our stairs.

July we traveled up to Northern Virginia and spent the Fourth of July with my parents touring Annapolis. When we returned we threw a couples shower at our home for our good friends Nicola and Dave, and an engagement party in uptown Charlotte for our besties Kristin and Dave. House Project: Hunter began the ultimate shed project!

August we concentrated on family! We drove up to my parents in NoVA in order to spend a short weekend with my WHOLE family...including...BOTH my brothers, sister-in-laws and all our nieces. The next weekend what was supposed to be a week long vacation with Hunter's family at Pawleys Island Beach, but was cut short when Hunter's grandad "E" unexpectedly passed away. We spent the rest of the week celebrating life in Danville VA instead. House Project: My grandmother handed down to me a very old tea cart. I had it refinished and found a lovely place for it in our dining room. The shed project continued....

September was the start to football season! A trip to DC for the opening game vs. Boise State at Fed Ex field followed by a trip to VaTech for the game vs. ECU. Hunter also entered the Blues Brews and BBQ contest in Charlotte and I ran in the Hog Jog 5k! House Project: I repainted our upstairs guest bedroom and guest bathroom. Aaaaaaaaand the shed project continued....

October equaled FOOTBALL FOOTBALL FOOTBALL until we had a bye week Halloween weekend, where we headed up to the Mountains of Boone NC for a relaxing weekend with friends! House Project: THE DREADED SHED :)

November I took a trip to NYC to visit my Best Friend Swanny who later got engaged the following weekend! We celebrated Thanksgiving in Danville, VA with Hunters family and then watched the Hokies cream UVA with both our families :) House Project: The shed project turned into the garage project as we began to empty the garage and filled up the new shed.

December - and how did we get here soooooooooo quickly? The holiday season was made Merry with an ACC Championship win by the HOkies in Charlotte. Then of course there was our Dirty Santa Christmas party and Christmas weekend spent up in Northern Virginia with my parents. House Project: Hunter finished off our garage by adding walls, molding, and painting the garage floor! The shed is STILL not complete.... :) The outside needs to be painted and inside organized.

Wow, I'm sort of thinking.... what do we need to blog throughout the year for, I can just do one big blog post at the end of every year :) Regardless, Time flies when your having fun and the number one reason I do blog is to record memories. It's nice to be able to look back and see when, where, and what we were up to at different times in our lives. It's also nice to be able to write down and organize my thoughts when I feel like my heads about to explode. An organizational tool, a creative outlet, and a memory book! .....I need to start printing out my posts and saving them some how. Gosh forbid google crashed one day and in a blink all of this was gone. Do you all back up your blogs somehow???

CHEERS! To 2011 and making more memories!!!!
